Amnesty International withdraws human rights prize for Myanmar's Suu Kyi

Amnesty International, Human rights, Myanmar, Suu Kyi

Amnesty International has withdrawn its Ambassador of Conscience award previously bestowed to Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Our expectation was that you would continue to use your moral authority to speak out against injustice wherever you saw it, not least within Myanmar itself," the human rights organization's secretary general, Kumi Naidoo, wrote in a letter to Suu Kyi that he tweeted out Monday.

Suu Kyi, 1991 Nobel peace Prize recipient is currently halfway through her term in office during which large scale violence was unleashed against the Rohingyas in the Rakhine State and an attempt to suppress the press freedom.

A blog released by the Amnesty International highlighted the atrocities meted out against the Rohingyas under Suu Kyi's regime.
